This is an intelligent and brave debut novel about a woman who falls in love with a merman. It’s funny, sharp and angry; there’s no rictus grin plastered onto her antiheroine’s face, and in this way the book resembles the new wave of female authors taking a much-needed swing at the societal myths surrounding conformity and normativity, from Chris Kraus to Maggie Nelson, Leila Slimani, Charlotte Roche and Kristen Roupenian. Broder’s essay collections and poetry are also well worth a read.
